Kindle is nowhere to be found

Amazon has run out of Kindle. The Ebook reader Kindle from Amazon was not an easy product and, in fact, there’s still time until the electronic book is consolidated, but the results are very good. About a year has passed since the Amazon Kindle was released and it already has accumulated sales in excess of 250,000 units. However, rather than sales of the device itself, Amazon’s great success is reflected in the download of virtual books, which accounts for 10 percent of the total sales of books.

Has the fact that Oprah recommended Kindle influenced the sales? maybe!

The Kindle is known as the iPod for books, for having been able to offer the best product of its kind to date and become, therefore, the most popular. Amazon.com put it on sale in November 2007 and its sales have been rising gradually for various reasons, including a publicity campaign órdago.

To begin with, born under the wing of a store like Amazon is already a guarantee. In remarks to CNN picked up by other press sites, the technology editor of Consumer Reports, Paul Reynolds, said in this sense: “You can not deny the importance that Amazon has had overalll behind this.” But if that was not enough, Kindle has been promoted in a TV program by none other than Oprah Winfrey, who exercised great power in the publishing world with usual recommendations of books.

ADVANTAGES OF DESIGN

However, the beauty of the technology is also responsible for the success of Kindle. Unlike its major competitor, the Sony e-reader, the product Apple does not need a USB cable to transfer the virtual books. This is a wireless device using a technology known as Whispernet. “I believe that the Whispernet is what puts Kindle apart from other e-readers on the market, felt the writer Leslie Nicoll, who has published the book ‘Frequently Asked Questions and Answers on the Amazon Kindle.”

Since then sales data for Kindle isbeyond doubt. Although the titles available in digital format for the device are around 200,000, a tiny figure compared with the huge supply of books at Amazon, in total sales in the latter years of e-books accounted for no less than 10 per cent. In total, Amazon sold 250,000 units of its product, which is now exhausted and has a waiting time of 11 to 13 weeks.

The company is already working on a new model of Kindle that is expected to appear in 2009, with improvements in the design. Although more data is not yet known, it was speculated that it will be thinner and improve the distribution of buttons, which in the current design takes users to accidentally switch pages sometimes. Its price on the Amazon site is 280 euros (359 dollars).

Those who thought that Gutenberg’s invention was so handy and so perfect in its conception that it would be irreplaceable even in the digital age, they begin to question their certainties. An enormous transformation is approaching in the publishing market. Especially after the arrival of a device that will mean its toughest competition, but his disappearance in the medium or long term. Stay with your name. Kindle is called.

For the moment, it is considered by experts publishers such as the iPod for books. Has begun to be sold only in the United States by Amazon, the online store that was introduced to the market, although its expansion will not be long. Nobody doubts that soon something similar, will reach the rest of the planet. To begin with, orders to 399-piece dollars (278 euros) – have been exhausted over the Internet. Meanwhile, in Spain, publishers, booksellers, distributors and writers are wondering: Are we ready for us Kindle?

It does not seem so. Vertigo, fear, ignorance, bewilderment is what produces more Kindle among those living in the book. No wonder. This invention, which measures 18 cm long by 13 wide and weighs 300 grams, is crazy to publishers, booksellers and writers, which in this case will be most benefited. In the guts of that space can fit up to 200 books. But users will have possibility to download, for now, 90,000 titles, plus access to newspapers around the world and blogs for all tastes.

But Kindle is that not only offers the advantages of a storage comparable to any library. Represents a new dimension in reading, with embedded dictionaries, as well as maps and street, not to mention the variable lighting of the screen and the possibility of adapting the bodies of letter to taste and sight of each other.

What many had feared, that is, a device that competes with the comfort and facilities practices of the book, begins to arrive and that not all letters of electronics manufacturers are dropped. “It remains to be seen what the launch of Apple and how to improve its bid for the Sony, the brand that has more invested in this field so far with the Sony Reader,” says Francisco Cuadrado, director general of Santillana. What is clear is that what comes out from now on will look like much to Kindle, say the experts. That is, that the invention represents a turning point in the history of the publishing market.

While some are hesitant to predict a future paradoxical. Optimistic and black at a time. With many more readers, but without bookstores. “I did I imagine a world without bookshelves,” said Santos Palazzi, head of the Mass Market area, the group Planeta. “It is beyond doubt that will affect the traditional market and that for the moment, live a coexistence of the two carriers, the digital and paper,” added Cuadrado. Even a classic publishing as Beatriz de Moura, owner of Tusquets, its future looks bleak. Although it refuses to go away thinking that these objects that has spent a lifetime: “I live these days with curiosity. There will be radical changes, although the book as such, has always found its way to survival,” he says. Until these booksellers are threatened: “Hard to imagine our role in a future without drama. We are very green in this matter,” says Fernando Valverde, president of the guild.

The first thing we supposed Kindle is another redistribution of the cake in the book. So far the percentages more or less clear. With its variations, the thing was as follows: 30% for the bookseller, distributor and publisher and 10% for the author. What percentage Kindled raze them all? It could eliminate all but those of the author. “It will be the most benefited from the distribution,” said Jose Antonio Millan, author of the blog The future of the book.

If a writer has a novel, hangs on his website and stay with what you want, who will discuss it? It’s what we have done to Radiohead with his latest album. The revolution brought by the digital age in the recording market may give clues. “We have the advantage of being able to learn from what happened in that field,” says Palazzi, Planeta.

The case is playing rethink the role of editor. And thoroughly. “They are a quality guarantee and will remain,” says Palazzi. His efforts to filter stand in the middle of that market hiperecléctico that lies ahead. “When detect items of interest, we will also continue to be useful,” says Square. Will become consultants as well. But the truth is that no one is going to need someone who is transformed into an object of the work. “There are modalities such as printing on demand, that is, get copies of anything in printing on demand or Internet sites where the authors publish their works,” says Square. This is the case of lulu.com or publishers who have come to be called vanity to have emerged in Argentina. “Even so, we need a stamp behind,” added the head of Santillana.

The promotion, marketing on the Internet will be key in the new era of publishing. “That will have to develop to the fullest,” and believe Palazzi Square. Like diversify the offer: “We will grow increasingly for smaller government,” added the second.

Cohabitation is, for now, inevitable. Especially with works of reference. “It presents an opportunity added to the market. If Amazon until now he has done has been to dispose of what we have stored, e-books will allow us to download catalogs,” says Riccardo Cavallero, managing director for Spain and Latin America Random House Mondadori.

In fact the major groups have already digitized all of its titles for what is to come. Each in its extent and not as Google is doing, for example, with an impressive project that aims at toppling the network all the books that exist. But the Italian publisher is optimistic not only in this area. In addition to what is the future of the traditional book. According to him, it will save fetishism. It will become an object of worship and more prestige. “The books are taught,” says Cavallero.

Also lump. And in a world of increasingly smaller spaces, to begin on objects in the houses. Many predict passage of a black future for manufacturers of shelves. Or to the players. According to Beatriz de Moura, intermediaries will be the first affected. “They are going to notice before the coup. They just need to anyone who placed their works,” believes the editor of Tusquets. Although the issue of copyright, with all the piracy that is on the network also will bring tail. There may be something to scratch in the future. “But it will be a thing of the publishers rather,” said De Moura.

On fetishism and collectors not everyone agrees. It may last for generations in these traditional readers. But the youngest … “appreciate the little object itself. They want everything to the voice of now. Immediately. Nor are they going to sign the books at the fair. Contact with the authors when they want it. And we can have even better before, the Internet, “says Square.

So some are imagining a future without book fairs such as Madrid, without signatures in the booths of the day. Teodoro Sacristan, director of the same, prefers not to think about it. “I do not want to imagine the scene, or what will be us,” he says.

Kindle has an electronic ink display of six inches and a resolution of 600 x 800 pixels. In addition, it plays a scale of four levels of gray. According to the company, reflects the letters as if it were paper and has no backlight, making it easy to read along with the possibility of expanding the size of the text.

“We’ve worked on Kindle for more than three years. Our goal is to design it disappears in your hands and you can enjoy reading,” says Jeff Bezos, founder and chief executive of Amazon, who also emphasizes its wireless connectivity and that does not A computer for ‘loaded’ with new readings.

This system, called Amazon Whispernet, uses technology EVDO, a data transmission system for high-speed telephone networks. Thus, users can download new content Kindle without searching for a connection point and free, as Amazon pays the bill for her connection.

The funds in his shop are the major asset of the company to succeed his device in an area where other large, such as Sony or Microsoft, they have not come to fruition. Amazon has more than 90,000 titles and 100 ‘best sellers’ ready to be downloaded to 9.99 U.S. dollars, a price far lower than in the printed books. However, we must have the 399 U.S. dollars it costs to the device.

Moreover, as if it were a book on paper, it is possible to make notes in the margins and edit, remove or ‘draw’ these notes of the device. Even pages can be marked for use later. They also can store text documents, images and sound, at a price of 0.10 U.S. dollars each.
Not just books, also news

One of the strengths of this’ gadget ‘is that it also allows you to download newspapers, magazines and blogs to subscribers. From the retail store to browse Kindle may be as normal and choose from the newspapers as’ The New York Times’ or ‘Le Monde’, magazines like ‘TIME’ or blogs like ‘Boing Boing’. You can also access the ‘The News Oxford American Dictionary’ and Wikipedia.

The editions are updated automatically during the night, so that the user has them available when waking up. The daily press service costs between 5.99 and 14.99 U.S. dollars per month, the magazine between 1.25 and 3.49 U.S. dollars, and the blog-over 300 -, 0.99 U.S. dollars a month for subscription.

In Kindle’s memory you can store more than 200 titles (185 MB), but it is possible to extend it with SD memory cards. In addition, all books that are purchased will be ‘copied’ on Amazon.com’s user account, so it is always possible to retrieve them, since you can connect to a computer through its USB input.

The battery is another of its strengths, as it connected to the wireless network lasts a full day and, without doing so, more than a week. In addition, it is completely recharged in two hours, according to what Amazon says.

A device ready to use just out of the box. No need to install any software or perform a complicated configuration. High technology for the average user. The only question is whether the average user is willing to pay for things you can get free to turn the Amazon Kindle into the ‘iPod for books’.

In all companies, wether you are selling information products or building houses there are many lessons to be had. In this example we will have a look at the latter.

So you just started a home based business. Your office is to your satisfaction. Your first wave of advertising has been sent. The printer’s just delivered your business cards. Sirprisingly the phone rings. Your first call! You answer nervously but professionally. The next few minutes pass very quickly, as you gradually realize the person on the other end of the line wants an estimate. She is asking how much it will cost to paint her bedroom. You think to yourself, “Good question.” To her, you say wildly, grasping at straws, “200 dollars.” “For everything?” she inquires. “Yes, for everything,” you say, wondering what she might have been implying. You close the deal and hang up the phone. Elated, you realize that she will become your very first customer.

So what is wrong with any of the above? You named your price, it was acceptable to the customer, and a deal was made. Everything is super, right? Before becoming too spirited, consider what now takes place.

You arrive at the customer’s home, on the agreed time and date. You make small talk, and are soon invited to see the room. Just before she opens the door, your customer more or less sngs, “I would have thought this would have been way more expensive! Thanks a million for charging such reasonable prices.” Your jaw hits the floor as you get your first look at your new project.

The walls appear to be crumbling! You quickly decide that the crumbling material is in fact old paint. It will need to be sanded down completely, patched, and primed, before you can even begin to paint. To make matters even worse, the room is larger than your entire house, and you quickly ascertain that you are expected to paint not only the walls, but the ceiling and all of the trim as well. There are four double hung windows, each of which will need to be hand-sanded and repaired, as will the chair rail, baseboards, and four closet doors and casements. You quickly redo the math and immediately realize that the price you quoted will not even pay for the amount of paint needed, not to mention all the other tools and supplies that you will need in order to do the job. You debate backpedaling, but quickly realize that new businesses live or die on the power of word of mouth, and to go back on an agreed-upon bid is suicide. You take the job in hopes of being able to write off your losses, and make a mental note do your home work next time around..

So what went wrong? How can this nightmare scenario be avoided? Fortunately, there is software available that will teach you the ropes of cost estimating, and even let you know the going rates in your area. A web search will provide you with a range of options, most priced at under $100. Another option is to join a lead generation service such as servicemagic.com. These services provide customer leads as well as a wealth of tools, including extensive cost estimators. Prices are quite reasonable, with sites generally charging an initial set-up fee plus a very small charge per accepted lead.

With the assistance of software, new business owners can avoid the pitfalls of estimating. It is also wise to avoid making quotes over the phone. Gradually, you will learn the key questions to ask in order to give a realistic ballpark figure, but even then you must stress to the customer that you will need to see the project before committing to a price.

When it comes running your business there are many ways of keeping up to date and learning new things. One very popular learning tool right now are various how to videos. A great place to find these is the online bookstore Ebook Maniac, particularly when you want various online business skills and strategies.
